Dodgers hire Pat Corrales as special assistant to GM

Mike Stobe

Pat Corrales has now worked for nine major-league teams in 53 years in baseball. Team No. 9 is finally his hometown team.

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced Monday that Pat Corrales has been hired as a special assistant to general manager Ned Colletti.

Corrales was a major-league catcher from 1964-73, spending five seasons with the Cincinnati Reds. He then spent nine years as a manager of the Texas Rangers, Philadelphia Phillies and Cleveland Indians. He also served as a bench coach for the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals, and was most recently the Nationals' bench coach in 2011. After that, he served the Nationals as a front office special adviser.

Along the way, Corrales worked with Dodgers CEO Stan Kasten in Atlanta and Washington.

James Wagner and Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post reported that Corrales' role with Los Angeles will primarily include evaluating talent at both the major- and minor-league levels.

Corrales was born in Los Angeles. When he was hired to manage the Rangers in 1978, he became the first Mexican-American manager in major-league history.
