Christmas Day Gifts: Clippers Help NBA Ratings Bliss

The NBA came back yesterday and TVs everywhere rejoiced.

The ratings for the five-game Christmas Day slate came back today with the games matching or surpassing some of their predecessors that were placed in the same position in previous years.

The much-anticipated debut of Chris Paul with the Los Angeles Clippers was the last game of the evening but it dwarfed the numbers put up by last season's game in the same spot in the Christmas lineup. The Clippers 105-86 win over the Golden State Warriors drew a 2.3 overnight rating, up 77 percent over last year's game between the Warriors and the Portland Trail Blazers and marked the highest-rated Christmas prime-time game for ESPN.

The Los Angeles Lakers 88-87 loss to the Chicago Bulls on ABC drew an overnight rating of 6.5. Only last year's Lakers game against the Miami Heat (7.3) and a 2004 Lakers-Heat matchup pitting Kobe Bryant against Shaquille O'Neal (7.9) had higher ratings for ABC.

Clippers Vs. Warriors Final Score: Clippers Pull Away Late, Win 105-86 In Chris Paul's Regular Season Debut

It's why everybody doesn't deserve to be called superstars.

Superstars do what Chris Paul did at the end of tonight's 105-86 win over the Golden State Warriors to start the Los Angeles Clippers highly-anticipated season off on the right foot.

Chris Paul is the definition of a superstar.

After letting his teammates do most of the damage through three-and-a-half quarters, Paul took three straight jumpers with under four minutes remaining in the game, with the final one at the end of the shot clock, to give the Clippers their biggest lead of the game at 97-84 with 2:38 remaining in the game.

Game over.

After an Andris Biedrins jump hook made it 82-81 with 6:45 left, the Clippers finished the game on a 23-5 run to pull away from what had been a back-and-forth contest most of the way.

Chauncey Billups finished with 21 points, five rebounds and four assists, Paul had 20 points and nine assists and Blake Griffin put in 22 points and seven rebounds to lead the Clippers as the newly-cemented Big Three of the West Coast.

Golden State's David Lee had a double-double with 21 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

Clipper Vs. Warriors Score Update: Clippers Regain Lead, 75-68, Heading Into Fourth Quarter

Blake Griffin was quiet in the first half but decided that the third quarter, especially early on, would be his time to shine as he scored nine points to help the Clippers take a 75-68 lead into the final period.

Griffin had eight of his nine points before the seven minute mark of the quarter but wasn't the only Clipper to get in on the act.

Caron Butler had eight points and the Clippers went on an 18-8 run to start the quarter. They took their largest lead of the game on a three-pointer by Butler that made it 63-53.

The Warriors and new head coach Mark Jackson resorted to a hack-a-DeAndre-Jordan strategy towards the end of the quarter in order to climb their way back into the game. Jordan hit three of his six freebies.

It's ugly offensively through three as the Clippers are shooting 43.3% from the field and the Warriors are even worse at 40.0%.

David Lee has 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Warriors. Chauncey Billups has 14 points and Blake Griffin has 16 points and six rebounds for the Clippers.

Clippers Vs. Warriors Score Update: Warriors Lead 43-41 At Half

The Los Angeles Clippers took a 24-20 lead into the second quarter only to watch it evaporate at the hands of the Golden State Warriors as the first half ended with the Clippers down 43-41.

The Clippers held an eight-point lead after two free throws by Brian Cook made it 36-28. But the Warriors went on a 9-0 run to take a one-point lead with less than four minutes remaining in the half and after going up 40-39, never trailed again.

The Warriors were led by David Lee's 11 points and eight rebounds and Monta Ellis' 12 points and four assists as his penetration gave the Clippers plenty of problems. The Clippers attack was more balanced with Chauncey Billups leading the way with nine points. The Warriors have held Chris Paul in check as he's missed five of his six shots. Blake Griffin has seven points and four rebounds.
