Angels Vs. White Sox Final Score: Los Angeles Defeats Chicago 4-1

The Los Angeles Angels kept their postseason hopes alive on Sunday with a 4-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

Neither team was able to put any runs on the board in the first five innings of the game, thanks to strong performances from starting pitchers Jered Weaver and Gavin Floyd.

But in the sixth inning, Floyd's solid start came to an end. The Angels scored two runs off an RBI double by designated hitter Albert Pujols, which was quickly followed up by a home run courtesy of first baseman Kendrys Morales.

Jered Weaver let up a run in the seventh, but a host of Angels relievers finished off the game without allowing any more runs.

The Angels improve to 84-69 with the win, while the White Sox fall to 81-71.

Angels Vs. White Sox Game Preview: Halos Still Fighting For AL Wild Card Spot

The Los Angeles Angels will turn to ace Jered Weaver against the Chicago White Sox on Sunday and it couldn't come at a better time.

With only two weeks left in the regular season, every game is precious and with a win on Saturday over the White Sox, the Angels pulled within 2.5 games of the second AL Wild Card spot.

"The biggest thing is, you need to win games and get other teams to beat up the teams in front of you," said Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick to MLB.com. "We'll take it any way we can get it."

Weaver will look for his 19th win of the season while sporting a 2.79 ERA (third in the AL). He will face White Sox righty Gavin Floyd, who is 10-10 with a 4.50 ERA this season.

Angels Vs. White Sox Game Recap: Los Angeles Defeats Chicago 4-2

The Los Angeles Angels scored four runs in the 1st inning and didn’t look back, downing the Chicago White Sox 4-2.

Albert Pujols got the scoring started for the Angels, using a ground rule double to drive in Mike Trout. Torii Hunter added an RBI single before Mark Trumbo drove in two more to cap off the four-run 1st.

This cushion proved enough for Angels right-hander Dan Haren, who allowed two runs on six hits with four strikeouts over six innings. Four Angels’ relievers combined to secure the victory, with closer Ernesto Frieri picking up his 20th save of the season.

Los Angeles’ win and an Oakland Athletics’ loss means the Angels are now 2 ½ games back of the second AL Wild Card spot.

Torii Hunter Hopes To Re-sign With Angels

Torii Hunter is optimistic about returning to the Los Angeles Angels next season. Hunter recently met with Angels' General Manager Jerry Dipoto and according to the Los Angeles Times, he left the lunch feeling like the club would put forward a serious effort to re-sign him when his deal is up in October.

The outfielder is in the final year of his current five-year, $90-million contract.

After the meeting, Hunter told the L.A. Times:

"I feel that they want me back, but at the same time, things have to align. ... If they align, I think I have a very good chance of remaining with this organization."

The nine-time Gold Glove winner is hitting .305 in 2012 with 15 home runs and 83 RBI. Now 37 years old, he has never hit better than .300 in a season during his 15-year career. The 83 RBI are already more than Hunter knocked in during all of last season.

Outfield is crowded territory for the Angels, with young All-Stars Mike Trout and Mark Trumbo seeming to have firm holds on center and left field, respectively. Also under contract are Peter Bourjos and Vernon Wells.

Mike Trout Discusses 'Surreal' Season

There's not much uncertainty regarding who will win the MLB Rookie of the Year award this season. The real question is whether or not Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout can claim both that honor and the league's MVP award, something that hasn't been done since Ichiro Suzuki won both in 2001.

The 21-year-old, who just signed his first endorsement deal with beverage brand BODYARMOR SuperDrink on Thursday, has put up unbelievable statistics this season, hitting at .324 and recording 27 home runs and 77 RBIs in 515 at bats. Trout spoke with Mike Francesa of WFAN in New York yesterday about his "surreal" season. Here are some of the highlights.

On his thoughts while in training camp:

"I was just trying to do what I can to help the team and I had a little rough stretch in the spring and got sick and had a little arm problem, but I got sent to Triple-A and it just made me work harder to get up here and I know what to expect up here. Just being here is pretty cool."

On whether or not he's been surprised with his instant impact as a rookie:

"Yeah it's been pretty cool for me. It's been pretty fun. It's pretty surreal actually meeting all the guys and going to the All-Star Game and just being on the field and playing every day at such a high level. I just gotta stay confident. That's the big thing for me is staying confident and going out there. My goal is scoring runs and that is going to help the team win."

Angels Vs. White Sox: Ervin Santana, Jake Peavy Battle In Game 1

The White Sox, who hold a two game lead in the AL Central, will opt for Jake Peavy (11-11, 3.26 ERA) this evening. The veteran righty is 0-2 with a 5.40 ERA in his last four starts against the Angels Peavy, and is 2-1 with a 3.06 ERA in three starts this month.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. PT with coverage on Fox Sports West and KLAA 830 AM.
