Angels' Jerome Williams Cleared To Resume Throwing

The Los Angeles Angels received some good news on Friday before their series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Anaheim, as starting pitcher Jerome Williams has been cleared to resume throwing. Williams was hospitalized after his start on Monday after experiencing shortness of breath, and was placed on the disabled list on Wednesday with the activation of Jered Weaver from the DL.

Manager Mike Scioscia said that Williams could throw a bullpen session within a couple of days if all goes well.

"He's been cleared for activity so that's obviously a first step," Scioscia said. "We'll see how he does getting to his long toss and back on the mound."

Williams is 6-5 this season with a 4.46 ERA, though he has lost his last three starts, allowing 16 runs in 16 2/3 innings during that span.

Weaver, who threw six shutout innings and 78 pitches in his return from the disabled list on Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants, showed no ill effects from his lower back strain after his start.

"Weaver feels really good," Scioscia said. "I think he feels just the normal stiffness you would get from going out there and pitching, and nothing connected at all with what put him on the disabled list."

In other Halos injury news, catcher Chris Iannetta was cleared to resume throwing. Iannetta, who underwent right wrist surgery on May 11, will begin a throwing program on Saturday. A minor league rehab assignment could soon follow.

"I think he's feeling a little more comfortable with where things are," Scioscia said.
