Angels' left fielder Vernon Wells will miss 8 to 10 weeks after sustaining an injury to his right thumb while stealing second on Sunday. The injury will require surgery, which he will undergo tomorrow in Los Angeles.
According to a statement from the team, the injury Los Angeles Angels' left fielder Vernon Wells sustained in Sunday's game versus the San Diego Padres will require thumb surgery. He is expected to miss eight to ten weeks. Wells suffered an injury to his ulnar collateral ligament while stealing base in the second inning of Sunday's game.
Wells will undergo surgery in Los Angeles by hand and wrist specialist Dr. Steven Shin. The Angels also saw right fielder Ryan Langerhans injured in Sunday's contest when he slammed into the outfield wall and separated his shoulder. Langerhans himself was a replacement for Torri Hunter, who is missing time due to a personal matter. In light of the rash of absences in the Angels' outfield, Kole Calhoun was called up from Salt Lake City to bolster the team's ranks.
Wells was batting .244 for the Angels, with an OBP of .282 and a slugging average of .422.
