In the bottom of the seventh inning, Scott Downs entered the game in relief of Kevein Jepsen, attempting to help protect the Angels' lead. After getting Luke Hughes out on one pitch with a sacrifice fly, Denard Span hit a squibber to the right side of the infield. Downs scrambled to cover first base as Albert Pujols fielded the ground ball. When Downs reached the bag at first, he appeared to roll his ankle just as Span accidentally stepped on his heel while reaching base safely ahead of the play.
Downs immediately went down in pain, with the training staff coming out while Span and the Los Angeles infielders expressed concern. Downs exited the game right away, walking under his own power but limping noticeably.
According to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times, Downs will undergo an MRI on Friday after the team arrives in New York for a series against the Yankees. It is possible that Downs may have ligament damage in his ankle.
