Angels Drop Opener In Seattle On Mike Carp Home Run

Angels Vs. Mariners: Mike Carp Home Run Sinks Halos 5-3

Mike Carp hit a two-run home run off Hisanori Takahashi in the bottom of the eighth inning, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels in the opener of a three-game series Monday night at Safeco Field. The loss pushes the Angels to three and a half games out in the American League West.

The Angels fell behind 2-0 after the first two innings, but Joel Pineiro settled down after that. Mark Trumbo hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his 24th of the season, to tie the game, then Erick Aybar doubled in Vernon Wells to give the Angels a one-run lead.

Dustin Ackley had three hits, including a double and a triple. His triple came in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the score. Pineiro lasted six innings, pitching his first quality start since July 9. Blake Beavan allowed three runs in seven innings for Seattle. He was followed on the mound by Tom Wilhelmsen, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning for his second win of the season. Brandon League recorded his 32nd save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Angels Vs. Mariners: Monday Starting Lineups

The Los Angeles Angels play the Seattle Mariners seven times in the next 10 days, including Monday night at Safeo Field, the start of a four-game series in Seattle. He made his major league debut against the Mariners on July 8.
