Angels Offense Backs Weaver In 7-1 Win Over Dodgers

Jered Weaver pitched eight strong innings, leading the Angels to a 7-1 victory over the Dodgers in the second game of the Freeway Series in Anaheim on Saturday night. This game wasn't the pitchers duel that last Sunday at Dodger Stadium was, thanks to the Angels offense jumping on Kershaw for a pair of three-run innings early. Erick Aybar and Vernon Wells led the seven-run, 10-hit attack for the Halos.

Weaver was great for the second straight start against the Dodgers, allowing just one run in eight innings, picking up his 10th victory of the season. Weaver allowed just one run in seven innings on Sunday, but got a no-decision thanks to a late Dodgers rally. Weaver had eight strikeouts and lowered his ERA to 1.92, tops in the American League and second only in MLB to Jair Jurrjens (1.89) of the Braves.

Kershaw had quite the bizarre night, as he allowed seven runs (six earned), but also walked just one and struck out 10 batters. The key blow in the third inning, the first of two straight two-run frames for the Angels, was a two-run home run by Vernon Wells, who has four home runs in his last seven games. Kershaw had 10 strikeouts for the third straight start, the longest streak by a Dodger since Hideo Nomo had four straight in 1995.

Chad Billingsley and Ervin Santana face off in the rubber game of the series Sunday night, in a nationally televised game on ESPN.
