Hunter Leads Angels Over Royals, 10-8

Torii Hunter's second home run of the game, a two-run shot in the ninth inning off closer Joakim Soria, helped the Los Angeles Angels to a 10-8 comeback victory over the Kansas City Royals in the first game of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium. The Angels scored one run in the seventh inning, two runs in the eighth, then three in the ninth to win their second straight contest. The Angels turned on the power for this win.

Hunter also homered in the seventh inning off Everett Teaford to cut the Royals' lead to 6-5, but Kansas City scored two in the bottom of the inning to widen their lead to 8-5. Mark Trumbo and Peter Bourjos hit solo home runs in the eighth to cut the deficit to 8-7, which led to Hunter's heroics in the ninth inning.

Keven Jepsen got the final out of the seventh inning and pitched a scoreless eighth to pick up his first win of the year. Fernando Rodney retired the Royals in order in the ninth, with two strikeouts, to notch his third save of the season. Bobby Abreu had four hits for the Angels, including two doubles. It was the first time the Angels have scored double-digit runs since May 5, when they beat the Red Sox 11-0 at Fenway Park.

Angels Vs. Royals: Halos Open Series In Kansas City On Memorial Day

The Angels have alternated wins and losses in their last seven games, but hope to break that trend Monday afternoon as they battle the Royals on Memorial Day in Kansas City. Ervin Santana gets the start for the Angels, in search of his third straight win, while Luke Hochevar gets the call for Kansas City. This is the Angels' second trip to Kansas City this year, as they opened their season losing three of four games at Kauffman Stadium.

Santana is 3-4 with a 3.95 ERA in 11 starts this season. He has won his last two starts, allowing just one run in his last 15 innings. Santana allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings in Kansas City on April 2, but got a no-decision in a game won in come-from-behind fashion by Kansas City in the eighth inning.

Hochevar is 3-5 with a 4.81 ERA this season, and leads the American League with 13 home runs allowed. The Royals have lost 12 of their last 15 games, and have lost six of their last eight contests at home. The Angels have not won consecutive games since beating the Braves then A's by 4-1 scores on May 22 and 23.

Today's 1:10 p.m. PDT game will be televised by Fox Sports West. For more news and information about the Angels, or on today's game, be sure to read the SB Nation blog Halos Heaven.
