Jered Weaver Scratched With Stomach Virus, Angels Battle Rays In Matchup Of Rookie Pitchers

It looks like the only thing that can stop Jered Weaver right now is health. Weaver was scratched from Sunday's start, as the Angels try to win a series in Tampa Bay against the Rays. Weaver has a stomach virus, per Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register, and rookie Tyler Chatwood gets the start today.

The Angels have already made two trips to Tampa Bay this season, and have won three of their four contests with the Rays. James Shields took a shutout into the ninth inning in Saturday's contest, but the Angels tied the game at 1-1, sending it to extra innings. A wild pitch by Fernando Rodney in the 10th inning allowed Matt Joyce to score the winning run.

Alex Cobb, a 23-year old pitcher who was 10-5 with a 2.60 ERA in Double A and Triple A since the beginning of last season, gets the start today for Tampa Bay, making his major league debut. The right-hander was drafted in the fourth round in 2006. Chatwood is making his fifth start of the season for the Angels, and is 2-1 with a 3.86 ERA.
