Dan Haren Leads Angels Over Rays, 5-1

The Los Angeles Angels got another quality start from Dan Haren today, ans swept away the Tampa Bay Rays with a 5-1 win at Tropicana Field. Haren allowed just one run on four hits in 7 2/3 innings, and his bullpen retired the final four batters in order to preserve the win. Haren has allowed just two runs in 14 2/3 innings so far this season, for a 1.23 ERA.

The Angels again scored in the first inning, on an RBI double from Bobby Abreu, and added single runs in the fourth, sixth, eighth, and ninth innings. The Rays' lone run came off the bat of B.J. Upton, who homered off Haren in the fifth inning. New closer Jordan Walden pitched a scoreless ninth inning, with a four-run lead, to close out the game.

Jeremy Hellickson stuck out 10 in his 5 2/3 innings for the Rays, but he was hung with the loss by allowing three runs.

Brandon Wood made his first start of the season today, at shortstop, and went hitless in four at-bats, with three strikeouts. The Angels went 3-3 on their season-opening six-game road trip. The Angels home opener is Friday against Toronto.

Angels Vs. Rays: Starting Lineups

The Los Angeles Angels look for a two-game sweep over the Tampa Bay Rays this morning at Tropicana Field. Dan Haren gets the start for the Angels, with Jeremy Hellickson making his first start of the season for Tampa Bay. The Angels have Thursday off, then have their home opener on Friday against Toronto.

Here are today's lineups, per Angels broadcaster Victor Rojas and Joe Smith of the St. Petersburg Times. Brandon Wood makes his first start of the season for the Angels, while Manny Ramirez gets the day off for the Rays.

Angels Vs. Rays: Dan Haren Starts As Angels Go For Two-Game Sweep

The Los Angeles Angels look for their second straight win at Tropicana Field this morning in an early start against the Tampa Bay Rays. Today is the final game of the six-game road trip for the Angels, who play their home opener against Toronto on Friday. Today's 10:10 a.m. PDT start will be televised on Fox Sports West.

Dan Haren gets the start for the Angels. Haren allowed one run in seven innings on Friday in Kansas City, but got a no-decision in a game the Angels would eventually lose in the ninth inning. Haren has made 15 starts as an Angel, and the club has scored more than four runs for him just once.

Jeremy Hellickson starts for the Rays, making his first start of the season. Hellickson made 10 appearances last season, including four starts, and was 4-0 with a 3.47 ERA. He was voted by Baseball America as the No. 6 prospect in baseball entering this season.
