2012 MLS Standings Week 5: Galaxy Dead Last, Chivas Climbs

The LA Galaxy faced off against the league's best in Sporting Kansas City this past weekend, and unceremoniously lost 1-0. Chivas USA had an easier opponent and took advantage, getting their second victory of the season 1-2 at Portland Timbers moving out of the Western Conference basement. The Galaxy remain in last place in the West, Chivas moves past the Timbers into 7th but stay Behind FC Dallas who also won on Saturday.

Chivas went down early in Portland, but got an equalizer from Alejandro Morena just after the second half kickoff and then the game winner from Nick LaBrocca in the 82'. Portland had four points going into the match, Chivas three. The Goats leapfrog the Timbers with the three points they earned, and are just one point behind FC Dallas and a cooled off Seattle Sounders side.

The Galaxy went into Kansas City to face an opponent who hadn't dropped a single point so far in the MLS season. That trend continued, with SKC picking up their 15th point; the first MLS team to do so since the Galaxy in 1998 and the first to do so since MLS did away with the shootout. As a result, the Galaxy remain at the bottom of the West with their lone victory. There are two teams in the East without a victory.

Next for the Galaxy is a home match against Portland Timbers FC, ninth place in the West vs eighth place. Chivas USA travel to Toronto FC this weekend; Toronto has yet to earn a point in MLS play.

Galaxy Vs. Sporting: LA Can't Shoot, So Kansas City Continues To Roll

The LA Galaxy continued to underperform, this time losing to Sporting Kansas City on the road 1-0; not taking a single shot on goal. Kei Kamara scored on a diving header late in the first half for Sporting KC, when Sean Franklin lost track of him in the box. With the win over the Galaxy, who were without David Beckham, SKC became the first team in the post-shootout era to go 5-0 to begin the season.

The last team at any point in MLS history to go 5-0 to begin the season was the 1998 LA Galaxy, though they began that streak with a shootout win. The 1996 LA Galaxy went 12-0 to begin the season, with one shootout win. KC is unbeaten at home against the Galaxy in five straight matches now. LA is 1-3-0 in MLS play since winning the MLS Cup last year.

This was Sporting's fourth shutout in five matches, and goalkeeper Jimmy Nielson did not have to make a save against the Galaxy. SKC has held teams without a shot on goal in two games now, 1 shot on goal in two others.

David Beckham did not make the trip, as back spasms kept him off the traveling roster. Landon Donovan returned to the team after being held from last weekend's match with quad tightness. The Galaxy lost last week's match 1-3 to New England.

Kamara's goal was his third of the season, connecting on a Bobby Convey cross in the 40th minute. Kamara beat Sean Franklin to the cross at the corner of the six yard box, then nestled the ball inside the far post.
