Following an 11-inning loss of the final game of their Nebraska series, UCLA baseball has dropped out of a consensus top five spot in the NCAA college baseball standings to No. 13 in Baseball America's rankings. Other polls treat the Bruins with more kindness: They're sitting pretty at No. 10 in the Coaches' Poll and No. 12 in the Collegiate Baseball rankings (where Trevor Bauer was also named a Louisville Slugger player of the week). UCLA joins a strong conference class in the national top 25, along with Arizona State, Stanford, Arizona, and Cal, in addition to state-mates Cal State Fullerton and Fresno State. Next up for the Bruins: The Dodgertown Classic, beginning March 11 in Jackie Robinson Stadium.

After a highly-publicized whiff at Randy Shannon and an even higher-publicized ill-fated courtship of former USC assistant Rocky Seto (and some much-needed Me Time in Cabo), Rick Neuheisel has a defensive coordinator in place for the 2011 college football season. The lucky fellow replacing the luckless Chuck Bullough: Joe Tresey, former DC at Cincinnati under Brian Kelly and at USF under Jim Leavitt.

But where was Tresey in 2010? The school's official release sticks that news waaay down in the sixth paragraph:

Tresey spent the 2010 season as defensive backs coach for the Omaha Nighthawks of the United Football League.

Everybody's entitled to a walkabout year, we suppose. For their part, Bruins Nation is keeping it on the sunny side:

We didn't see this coming, but we're glad we're here. If the paper profileholds up, then we appear to have all the boxes on the list checked off.

Aggressiveness? See the record at USF and Cincinnati.

Experience? 14+ years coaching at various college levels, 3 years DC at Div. I level, and 5 years DC at lower college levels, too.

Up-and-comer? Looks like it here from the cheap seats.

Price? Safe to say that a Pac-10 salary is probably more handsome than USF or the UFL.

At any rate: Welcome to Coach Tresey! Maybe shell out for an extended-stay hotel for a couple weeks, just to make sure this hire sticks.

Do you like it when the Lakers have lots and lots of money? If you do, you're going to love the new TV deal they just forged with Time Warner, a bombshell dropped to the tune of 20 years and $3 billion (that's THREE BILLION DOLLARS):

Flint reports that the Lakers had been receiving $30 million per year from Fox for the right to broadcast games on FoxSports West locally. Given the NBA's penchant for placing the Lakers on national TV broadcasts, that comes out to about 60 exclusive local games per season, or $500,000 per game. The new deal, executed for 20 years, comes out to about an estimated $2.5 million per game.

As Ziller points out, the big deal here is the vast slice of local revenue the team gets to pocket. It's good to be the kings.

SB Nation's NBA power rankings, released Tuesday morning, feature exactly one Los Angeles basketball team ranked in the top 15. (See if you can guess which one -- yeah, never mind.) Despite a couple nasty spills this month, the Lakers still hold the No. 4 spot:
↵
L.A.'s February road trip turned sour in a hurry with back-to-back blow-out losses in Orlando and Charlotte.
(Sports Network) The Oregon State Beavers get a three-game road trip underway tonight, as they invade the Galen Center to challenge the USC Trojans in a Pac-10 matchup.

The Beavers enter the contest on a low note, as they were upended, 61-55, by Washington State on Saturday. It marked the fourth loss in the past five games for OSU, which dipped to 4-7 within the conference. To make matters worse, the Beavers now head out to the road, where they have gone just 1-7, including 0-4 in league play.

As for the Trojans, they have been out of action for just over a week now, last participating in a 64-50 loss at UCLA on February 2nd. The loss was the second straight and third in four games for USC, which is now just 4-6 in conference action. The good news though, is USC now returns back home, where the team has logged a successful 9-3 mark.

USC leads the all-time series with OSU, 65-59, but the Beavers have won the last three meetings, including an 80-76 triumph just last month.

The Beavers went a horrific 11-of-23 at the foul line and that cost them in a 61-55 loss to Washington State this past weekend. OSU didn't help matters with a 2-of-17 effort from long range, although the team did hang close by scoring 22 points off 20 Washington State turnovers. Devon Collier paced the Beavers in the setback with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Jared Cunningham posted 12 points and five steals. Cunningham currently leads the squad in scoring at 13.8 ppg and he is also a terrific defender with 64 steals to his credit. Calvin Haynes adds 10.0 ppg for the Beavers, who are averaging 70.0 ppg as a team.

USC simply could not find its stroke last time out, shooting only 29.3 percent from the floor in a loss to UCLA. The Trojans also struggled from long range (1-of-9) and at the foul line (9-of-17), in addition to losing the battle on the boards, 39-25. Nikola Vucevic guided the squad in defeat with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Alex Stepheson checked in with 14 points and eight boards. On the campaign, Vucevic heads the team in scoring and rebounding with his near double-double average of 16.7 ppg and 9.8 rpg. Jio Fontan follows with 10.5 ppg and Donte Smith adds 10.3 ppg coming off the bench. Smith is also the team's top three-point threat, connecting on 39.4 percent of his attempts.

The Trojans are well rested and back at home, so expect them to prevail over an OSU squad that has struggled on the road.

(Sports Network) The UCLA Bruins will attempt to complete a season sweep of the Oregon Ducks when the two teams meet tonight in a Pac-10 Conference clash from Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.

Last month, UCLA beat Oregon by a 67-59 final to extend its series lead over the Ducks to 82-27.

Oregon has turned around a season that earlier featured a six-game losing streak. The Ducks have won their last two games and four of the last five overall to improve to 12-11 on the year and 5-6 in league action. They knocked off Washington last Saturday by an 81-76 final, avenging an 18-point loss to the Huskies last month.

UCLA may very well be the best team in the Pac-10, as it has won its last three games and seven of the last eight overall to move to 16-7 for the season, and 7-3 in conference. The Bruins took a break from league action last Saturday to knock off St. John's by a 66-59 final, and they are now 12-2 at Pauley Pavilion.

Joevan Catron has been a big-time performer for Oregon this season, and he came through with 20 points in the victory over Washington last time out. Catron also ripped down nine rebounds and recorded three steals for the Ducks, who got 16 points from E.J. Singler and 14 points from Tyrone Nared. A 19-5 edge in points from the foul line clearly played a key role in the win for Oregon, as did a tremendous ratio of 21 assists to just eight turnovers. Catron has clearly emerged as a candidate for All-Pac-10 honors, as he is netting 16.0 ppg on 52.8 percent shooting from the floor while ripping down 6.7 rpg. Singler is the only other double-digit scorer on the roster with his 11.2 ppg, and the Ducks are generating 70.3 ppg wile surrendering 68.7 ppg to foes.

For the second straight game, Joshua Smith led UCLA in scoring in the victory over St. John's last Saturday. Smith tallied 19 points and eight rebounds off the bench, and Malcolm Lee came through with 15 points. Reeves Nelson only attempted four field goals and finished with a modest total of 12 points, but his 17 rebounds were obviously a major contributing factor in the win. As for Tyler Honeycutt, Reeves' frontcourt partner, he chipped in 11 points for the Bruins, who overcame 22 turnovers by limiting the Red Storm to 39.7 percent shooting from the floor. A 40-28 edge on the boards helped the cause, as did a 27-5 advantage in points from the foul line. Nelson is scoring 14.1 ppg on 58.4 percent shooting from the floor, and he is ripping down 8.8 rpg. Lee and Honeycutt are both contributing 13.0 ppg, and Honeycutt provides 7.9 rpg as well. Lazeric Jones brings further balance to the lineup with 10.7 ppg, and Smith is averaging 10.6 ppg for the Bruins, who are posting 71.4 ppg while allowing 67.3 ppg.

Expect the Bruins to win this game rather easily, as they will dominate the paint. This meeting won't be as competitive as the first between the squads.
