Ducks Vs. Capitals: Late Goals Give Caps Win

The Anaheim Ducks had a 3-0 halfway through the second period, but the Caps then outscored the Ducks 5-1 to win 5-4 in overtime. The loss is the third straight for the Ducks who have two games left on their seven game road trip. Jonah Hiller had to face 30 shots over the last two periods, compared to just nine shots by the Ducks on Tomas Vokoun

Things looked good for the Ducks early, after Teemu Selanne scored his fourth and fifth goals of the year to put the Ducks up 3-0. Andrew Cogliano launched a 44 foot wrist shot, then Cam Fowler scooped up the rebound and sent it back out to Selanne who slapped it in from 40 feet out.

The Caps were quick to answer back, with Joel Ward putting one in five minutes later right through Hiller from a sharp angle. Then, after a scramble in front of his net, Hiller let in Cap goal number two to Dennis Wideman who blasted one in from the point.

The Ducks got a break in the third period, when they got a power play after Vokoun tripped Corey Perry. Perry looked a little banged up, but got even with a short wrist shot to put the Ducks back up 4-2. The power play goal with 10:47 left looked to put a bow on the game.

However, the Caps weren't done, as Troy Brouwer scored on a slap shot from near the blue line two minutes later. The final goal in regulation came with 42 seconds left in the game, as the Caps went empty net. The extra man payed off, as Nicklas Backstrom tied it with a wrist shot that was the third shot of a barrage against Hiller. Backstrom's first shot was saved, as was Chimera's followup, but the inability to clear the puck cost the Ducks.

Nicklas Backstom would end up the hero of the game, as he scored in overtime smashing in a loose puck with Ovechkin assisting on the play. Alexander Ovechkin saw limited ice time tonight, but it seemed to pay off when the Caps got it back in gear.

The Ducks still get a point out of the game, but they'll certainly be disappointed to continue their losing streak. Anaheim moves on to New York to take on the Rangers Thursday, then they finish out the road trip in Detroit.
