Columbus Crew forward Justin Meram struck a left-footed shot past Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy in the 89th minute on Wednesday night as the Crew defeated Chivas, 1-0.
The game-winner came off an assist from a headed pass by forward Jairo Arrieta as full time neared its end, and it was one of 21 shots from the Crew. Chivas managed just nine shots and couldn't muster up enough offense to come up with an equalizer.
Chivas midfielder Oswaldo Minda nearly tied the game up when he struck a right-footed shot from just outside of the box that was saved by Columbus keeper Andy Gruenebaum.
The possession battle was another key component of the match, as total time of possession favored the Crew, 55%-45%. Columbus notched five saves while Chivas managed three.

It continues to go downhill for Chivas USA. Another loss, this time to the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, pushed them further down into the basement of the MLS Western Conference standings.
Chivas USA sits at 7-13-7 on the season with only 28 points in a conference led by the Earthquakes who have 56 points and a 17-6-5 record. The Earthquakes are followed by the Seattle Sounders FC (48 points), LA Galaxy (46 points), Real Salt Lake (46 points) and Vancouver (37 points).
Only seven games remain in a season to forget but only two more games are left against Western Conference playoff teams (Vancouver and Real Salt Lake). Chivas USA's next game is against the Columbus Crew, an Eastern Conference team fighting for a playoff spot as the current first team out.

Without a win in their previous six matches, Chivas USA was unable to grab any points on Saturday night at the Home Depot Center, dropping their match with the San Jose Earthquakes, 2-0, and falling into the cellar of the Western Conference.
Despite keeping the game at a scoreless tie much of the way through the first half, the Earthquakes were able to convert a penalty kick in the 40th minute to break the tie. The goal proved the only score San Jose would need on the night, despite its controversial nature.
Chivas defender John Valencia hit the Earthquakes' Alan Gordon away from the play, which resulted in a penalty kick being awarded to San Jose after the referees conferred. The decision was one Chivas coach Robin Fraser did not agree with, and he was ejected for arguing. The Quakes Chris Wondolowski converted the penalty kick.
Gordon scored a fantastic goal in the 50th minute to put the game away.

Chivas USA host the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday in Western Conference MLS action. This is the third meeting between the teams this season. They played to a 1-1 draw back in May, and San Jose took a 4-0 dominant victory when the two played Sept. 2.
There isn't much on the line for Chivas USA except pride. San Jose has clinched a playoff spot, while Chivas sits at the very bottom of the rankings. The Goats' most recent game, a 2-1 loss to the Seattle Sounders, did show improved play from the San Jose loss. That isn't much consolation when on a six-game winless streak, but at this point in the season Chivas may be inclined to take what they can get. They've been competitive with San Jose in the past, and fans hope they can find a way to do it again Saturday night.

Despite a defensive minded effort, the Seattle Sounders' Eddie Johnson scored twice, including a key 89th minute strike, to down Chivas USA on Saturday, 2-1.
Chivas USA struck first against Seatlle, as Nick LaBrocca scored in the box off of a pass from Shalrie Joseph in the eighth minute. The Chivas goal broke Seattle goalie Michael Gspurning's 389-minute clean sheet streak at home.
Early defensive stands kept Seattle off of the scoreboard, as Chivas tried to keep the Sounders from gaining ground in the Western Conference race as the MLS season winds down. But in the 29th minute, Johnson equalized, scoring on a header off of a free kick from Christian Tiffert.
Locked in a scoreless battle for the next 60 minutes, both teams fought hard, but kept penalties and cards to a minimum, as only two cautions and no cards were given.
Finally, in the 89th minute, Johnson finished a cross from Shalrie Joseph with another header, sending Seattle to the victory.

Chivas USA are nine points out of the fifth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with nine games left on the schedule, having played the fewest games of anyone in the league. Today the Goats begin using those games in hand as they travel to take on the Seattle Sounders this afternoon.
When these teams met two weeks ago, Seattle put a 6-2 beating on Chivas at The Home Depot Center. In their first game of the season, back on May 26, the two western conference foes split the points in a 1-1 draw.
Seattle is currently in third place in the conference with 44 points from a 12-6-8 record. Chivas currently sits at eighth in the Western Conference at 7-11-7, giving them 28 points. Seattle has only lost three times in front of the home crowd at CenturyLink Field this season.

Chivas USA's worst enemies right now are the Vancouver Whitecaps, FC Dallas and time.
With only nine games left on their MLS schedule, Chivas USA doesn't have a lot of time to make up the deficit between them and the fifth and final playoff spot that Vancouver currently owns.
Chivas USA has 28 points due to a 7-11-7 record and trails FC Dallas (33 points, 8-12-9) and the Whitecaps (37 points, 10-11-7). A nine point gap is substantial and could be constituted as insurmountable but Chivas USA has vowed to keep on fighting.
Of the nine games that remain, two are against FC Dallas which will give Chivas USA a chance to help their own chances while hurting the chances of a team that they're chasing. Chivas USA's next game is on September 8 at the Seattle Sounders.

In desperate need of points to stay in the MLS playoff picture, Chivas USA was able to pick up one point Wednesday by earning a 3-3 draw with the New England Revolution.
Chivas now has 28 points on the season, nine behind the Vancouver Whtiecaps for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Chivas does have the advantage of having played three fewer matches, but they need to consistently start adding points.
Early on against the Revolution it appeared Chivas would be heading home without any points as they fell behind 3-0 just 21 minutes into the game. Shalrie Joseph, however, got them on the board just two minutes later with the first of his two goals.
Chivas trailed 3-1 at halftime, but came out strong in the second half. Joseph scored his second goal of the match at the 46-minute mark, with Miller Bolanos tying the game at 3-3 just a minute later. Neither team was able to break the tie over the final 43 minutes, and the match ended in a draw.
Chivas will try to add more points on Sunday when they travel to San Jose to face the Earthquakes.

Chivas USA takes on the New England Revolution in an MLS match on Wednesday evening at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. The Goats are clinging to playoff hopes as the season heads into the final two months.
An embarrassing 6-2 loss to the Seattle Sounders on Saturday left Chivas USA 10 points behind Vancouver Whitecaps FC for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The good news for the Goats is that they can make up ground, as they have played four less games than the Whitecaps. To do that, they will have to improve upon their recent play.
The Goats are winless in their last three MLS matches, and have been outscored, 11-3, in that time period. Their goal differential now sits at -17, which is third-worst among all MLS teams.
Wednesday's match will be the only meeting between Chivas USA and New England this season.

Juan Pablo Angel scored an equalizer in the 83rd minute for Chivas USA, helping his team avoid a loss against the Colorado Rapids, 1-1, on Saturday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
The Rapids drew first blood in the 19th minute when Brian Mullan stole the ball from Shalrie Joseph and put a shot past Chivas' Dan Kennedy in the first half.
Chivas/ offense struggled the entire match, but Angel was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time with seven minutes remaining in the match.
Tristan Bowen, a reserve for Chivas, crossed the ball from the left with Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens diving for it but unable to corral it. Once it was past Pickens, Angel came in and easily sent the ball into the goal.
Chivas USA is currently second to last in the Western Conference and is trying to make a late-run for the conference's fifth and final playoff spot. They are 13 points back from the fifth place Rapids in the standings. Chivas is 7-9-6 on the season. They will host Seattle on Aug. 25th.
