Wimbledon 2012: Roger Federer Tops Andy Murray For Record-Tying 7th Title

History was waiting to be made at the All England Club on Sunday at the championships Wimbledon 2012.

Andy Murray looked to become the first English man to win the event since 1936, while Roger Federer was eyeing his incredible 7th Wimbledon victory to make history as well. And with some wet weather and the roof closed the tennis gods smiled down on Federer as he bested Murray in four sets for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory on Centre Court.

The victory marks the 17th career grand slam title for the 30-year-old Federer, tying the mark set by Pete Sampras and William Renshaw at the All England Club.

"It's amazing," Federer said in the postmatch ceremony. "It equals me to Pete Sampras, who's my hero. It's just amazing."

Federer is now 17-7 in Grand Slam finals, while imporving his mark at Wimbledon to 7-1. Murray dropped to 0-4 in major finals, with three of those coming against Federer.

"Everybody always talks about the pressure of Wimbledon, how tough it is," said an emotional Murray, who, microphone in hand, needed nearly a minute to compose himself before speaking. "But it's not for the people watching. The support's been incredible. So thank you."

Many of England's finest were on hand to possibly see Murray make history, such as Prince William's wife, Kate, David Beckham, British Prime Minister David Cameron and a number of former Wimbledon champions sat in the sat Royal Box.

Williams continued her inspired play by knocking out defending champion Petra Kvitova in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon to advance to her eighth Wimbledon semifinal.

It was the first time in 11 matches at Wimbledon that Kvitova has lost, with her last loss also coming at the hands of Williams in the 2010 semifinals. Williams went on to win that title, which was her fourth.

"She's been playing so well on grass," Williams said. "I had absolutely nothing to lose."

Williams is now two wins away from becoming the first woman over age 30 to win a Grand Slam title since Martina Navratilova won Wimbledon in 1990.

Wimbledon 2012 Scores And Results: Andy Murray Advances To Round 4, Andy Roddick Loses

Day 6 of the 2012 Wimbledon Tennis Championships finished up with Andy Murray desperately trying to finish off Marcos Baghdatis before the 11 p.m. end-of-day time limit kicked in. Murray took the first set in the match 7-5, but lost the second 3-6 and seemed to struggle early in the third. Midway through the third he began to show some life and from that point on the momentum was all his. He won the third set 7-5 and by the middle of the fourth set Baghdatis looked exhausted. Murray kept the pressure on, anxious to not see the match delayed until the following day, and when it hit 11 p.m. he was ahead 4-1. Officials allowed play to continue, and Murray didn't need more than two minutes to finish off Baghdatis. He dominated the final set, ultimately winning 6-1.

In other action from the day at Wimbledon, Andy Roddick lost to David Ferrer. He took the first set but lost the next three, seeing what may be his last Wimbledon run come to a close. 2012 Wimbledon Results: Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic Survive Early Scares

Just one day after Rafael Nadal was stunned in Wimbledon, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic had some serious competition on their hands to advance to the fourth round.

Federer squared off with No. 29 Julien Benneteau, and the two needed five sets to determine a winner. Benneteau won the first set 6-4 and took the second in tiebreaker, 7-6, but then it was Federer's turn to rally. The world's No. 3 player won the third set 6-2 and the fourth 7-6 in tiebreaker, leaving just one set to go. Federer went into cruise control and had clearly worn out Benneteau, winning 6-1 in convincing fashion.

Djokovic dropped his first set against No. 28 Radek Stepanek, but he came back to win the next three 6-2, 6-2 and, yes, 6-2. It was a brief scare for the world's top-ranked player, but no one ever said a championship at Wimbledon would come without challenge.

2012 Wimbledon Results: Serena Williams Advances To Second Round

Serena Williams did not suffer the same fate as her sister, Venus, as she defeated Barbora Zahlavova-Strycova, 6-2, 6-4 on Tuesday to advance to the second round at Wimbledon.

Williams lost for the first time in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament at this year's French Open, but the win moved her first round record to 47-1 in Grand Slams in her career.

2012 Wimbledon Results: Mardy Fish Advances In Return To Court

Mardy Fish made his return to the court after a medical procedure on his heart that had him out for 10 weeks by defeating Ruben Ramirez-Hidalgo of Spain, 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-6 (1) to move on to the second round of Wimbledon.

Fish is the 10th-seed in the tournament and the second-ranked player in the US but no one knew what to expect from him upon his return. The 30-year-old hadn't played a competitive match in 2 1/2 months due to an accelerated heartbeat that first gave him issues after losing a match on March 29 at Key Biscayne, Fla.

At last year's Wimbledon, Fish had his best showing by reaching the quarterfinals.

Fish spoke with ESPN.com about his feelings heading into Wimbledon.

"Definitely happy to be here but I also want more. I have a good draw. But I'll take it one at a time. Realistically, I don't know. This is the best case for me surface-wise to come back on. Two out of three sets would be better than best-of-five, but it's not as taxing as the French. Maybe the French would have been almost impossible to come back that early. So we'll see. I haven't played a real match in a while. Practices have gone way better than expected."

First match down, second round to go.

2012 Wimbledon Results: Venus Williams Ousted In First Round

Following in the footsteps of her sister Serena's first round exit in the French Open, Los Angeles native Venus Williams is already out of Wimbledon after a shocking dismantling at the hands of Russian Elena Vesnina, 6-1, 6-3 on Monday, according to the Associated Press.

Williams is still making her way back from a long layoff due to being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease in 2011. The French Open was her first Grand Slam since August 29, 2011.

For the second consecutive Grand Slam, one of the Williams' sisters is ousted in the first round.
