2012 Kentucky Derby Results: I'll Have Another Wins, Overtaking Bodemeister In Final Stretch

Louisville, Kentucky's Churchill Downs saw the 138th annual Kentucky Derby today, and in the end 14-1 I'll Have another took the 2012 Running of the Roses after overtaking Bodemeister in the stretch. 9/2 favorite Union Rags had a disappointing outing, getting stuck in traffic and finishing in the crowd. Bodemeister held the lead for much of the race before succumbing to I'll Have Another in the final stretch. Dullahan came in third.

I'll Have Another was in the 19th pole position, which proved to be an advantage when traffic at the rail robbed other contenders at their chances. Bodemeister ran a strong race, putting up brutal splits and even taking on Trinniberg, a horse with a much stronger sprinting capability. In the end, it was not enough as I'll Have Another closed the distance on the stretch and finally took the lead with around 100 yards to go.

Kentucky Derby 2012: Cocktail Creations For Your Viewing Pleasure [VIDEO]

You may not be aware of this, but the trophy for the winner of the Kentucky Derby is made of 56 ounces of 14 and 18 carat gold, standing a majestic two feet tall. Now that would make you one very large (and likely very tasty) Mint Julep.

SB Nation's resident alcoholic cocktail expert Matt Ufford has found some perfect recipes for some classic southern cocktails like the Mint Julep, Old Fashioned and Whiskey Smash, all staples of the Kentucky Derby. Check out the video below to see how to make them, along with ingredients you'll need listed below as well.

MINT JULEP:

1. Muddle 3-5 sprigs of mint with simple syrup or sugar (to taste)

2. Add 3 oz. bourbon and crushed ice in layers

3. Garnish with mint

WHISKEY SMASH:

1. Muddle 2-4 pieces lemon, 3-5 sprigs of mint, and simple syrup or sugar to taste

2. Add 2-3 oz. bourbon, stir, and strain (optional)

3. Garnish with mint and/or lemon

OLD FASHIONED:

1. Mix 1/2 oz. simple syrup with 2 dashes bitters OR Muddle 1 sugar cube in a splash of water and 2 dashes bitters

2. Add 2 oz. bourbon (or rye) with ice, stir

3. Garnish with twist of lemon or orange

Kentucky Derby 2012 Picks: I'll Have Another A Value Bet, Creative Cause To Place

There are four horses with Los Angeles connections, and all of them are trailing the current favorites Bodemeister and Union Rags. The ones with the best overall odds are I'll Have Another and Creative Cause, who both sport 12/1 odds.

Indeed, if you're looking for a value pick here, I'll Have Another isn't too bad. He won the Santa Anita Derby and is used to performing well in long races like the daunting mile and a quarter these horses will have to tread at Churchill Downs. As long as the weather stays clear, this might be a horse to ride on.

Creative Cause might be a good bet to place (hasn't finished worse than third in his eight races) and not a bad bet to win either; the horse just loves finishing high up there.
