College Baseball 2012: UCLA Loses Opening Series With 5-1 Loss To Maryland

The UCLA Bruins opened their 2012 season at home this weekend and ended up losing two of their first three. They dropped the rubber match on Sunday by a final score of 5-1.

The game was marred by three UCLA errors that would give Maryland all the runs they would need. Zack Weiss was the hard-luck loser for UCLA in this one, pitching the first five innings that saw the Terps go up 3-0, despite not getting any earned runs. Maryland got on the board in the top of the first on a dropped fly ball by the second baseman, added a second run in the second inning on a dropped fly ball by the center fielder and brought a runner home on a sac foul-out in the third after a throwing error sent him to third base. Perhaps in a bit of poetic justice, the only run for the Bruins came on a hit batsman, a walk, a fielder's choice and a groundout to first base in the bottom of the sixth inning.

WP - Brett Harman (1-0): 5 IP, 2 hits, 8 strikeouts, 1 walk

LP - Zack Weiss (0-1): 5 IP, 5 hits, 1 strikeout, 2 walks
