A tempestuous breeze during the first round of play at the Northern Trust Open has made low scoring a bit difficult thus far, as only nine players sit in red numbers at the moment, led by big hitting Bubba Watson at 4-under on his round today.
Bubba has done well to avoid making bogies so far on Thursday, rocking a clean scorecard through the first 13 holes after teeing off No 10. Birdies on 13 and 17 sent him out at 2-under after his first nine, than back-to-back- birdies on 2 and 3 moved him two shots clear of the field. He would make his first bogey No. 4, his 14th hole, to drop back to 3-under for the day.
K.J. Choi, Jonathan Byrd, Jim Furyk and three others currently sit at 2-under for the tournament, while No. 1 golfer in the world Luke Donald is at 1-under through 15 holes today.
Much of the field is yet to tee off, including last week's champ at Pebble Beach Phil Mickelson, who is scheduled to tee off No. 1 at 12:12 p.m. PT.
