Bill Haas Tops Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson In Playoff At 2012 Northern Trust Open

Phil Mickelson looked like he was out of it after two bogeys on 14 and 15 put him off the pace of Bill Haas after Haas birdied the 17th hole to take a one shot lead. But Mickelson and Keegan Bradley had dramatic putts on the 18th to force a three-way playoff at Riviera Country Club.

Mickelson, Haas and Bradley all had great shots on their first playoff hole. Mickelson took a safe angle to the hole and put it on the green, but Haas (who shot right after Mickelson) put it short of the green. Bradley then put it the closest overall with a shot that went right past the hole and landed a few feet behind it on the fringe of the green.

Haas chipped the putt onto the green that gave him a good opportunity at par, Mickelson put his long putt short, and then Bradley saw his potential winning put race just off the edge of the hole. All three hit their par putts.

On the second playoff hole, all three struggled to find the green, but then Haas holed in a long putt to top Mickelson and Bradley in regulation.

2012 Northern Trust Open, Final Round Leaderboard: Phil Mickelson Falls Behind Bill Haas After Front Nine

Midway through the final round at the Northern Trust Open Phil Mickelson is hanging on at Riviera Country Club, but a slew of competitors have bunched toward the top of the leaderboard trying to take the tournament from him, including young gun Bill Haas, who took a one shot lead over him after the front nine.

Northern Trust Open 2012: Phil Mickelson, Keegan Bradley Share The Lead After Third Round

After the third round of the 2012 Northern Trust Open, Phil Mickelson and reigning US PGA champion Keegan Bradley share the top spot on the leader board at seven under par. Mickelson shot a 70 on Saturday but Bradley made the bigger move on Saturday, shooting a 66.

Mickelson opened with a birdie but had just a mediocre round after that.

"I probably didn't play the greatest today, but I was able to kind of salvage a good round and had a good break on eight where I holed out from the fairway; that was a nice little bonus," Mickelson said, PGATour.com reported.

Mickelson and Bradley weren't the only two that set themselves up in the third round, though. Bryce Molder, who is tied with Pat Perez and Jonathan Byrd at six under par also shot a 66 on Saturday as did Aaron Baddeley, who is now sitting at five under par.

2012 Northern Trust Open Leaderboard
Rank Golfer Total Round 3
1 Phil Mickelson -7 70

2012 Northern Trust Open Third Round: TV Schedule, Tee Times, Parings For Saturday

The 2012 Northern Trust Open couldn't quite finish the second round on Friday, halted for darkness with eight players still on the course. However, none of those players are within striking distance of the lead so we have a pretty good idea of what the final pairings will be in Saturday's third round. Here are the relevant details of Saturday's golf from Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades.

Time: Play on the course will start at 6:45 a.m. PST, with David Hearn, Ryo Ishikawa, Hunter Haas, Erik Compton, Jordan Spieth (amateur), Danny Lee, Ted Potter Jr., and Austin Graham completing their second round.

TV: CBS will provide coverage beginning at noon, for three hours

Cut Line: Likely +3, as 77 golfers are currently at or below that line. Both Spieth (+4 through 16 holes) and Danny Lee (+5 through 16) still have a shot to make the cut with two holes remaining in their second round.

Final Pairings: Phil Mickelson (-6) and Pat Perez (-5) will end the day on Saturday as the top two players in the field. Jimmy Walker (-4) and Matt Kuchar (-4) will be paired, as will Carl Pettersson (-4) and Jarrod Lyle (-4). Jonathan Byrd (-4) and Marc Leishman (-3) will team up, as will Spencer Levin (-3) and Bubba Watson (-3), rounding out those within three shots of the lead.

Northern Trust Open 2012: Pat Perez, Jarrod Lyle Shoot Low Round 65 To Keep Pace With Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson was able to hold his lead on Friday, shooting a one-under 70 in the second round of the 2012 Northern Trust Open at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. Mickelson has led after each of the two rounds, and now at six under par holds a one-shot lead over Pat Perez, who along with Jarrod Lyle had the low rounds of the day with a 65.

"I didn't hit it like you'd think I would," Perez told the Associated Press. "I didn't drive it all that great. I just scrambled well. I put myself in the right places to make par or birdie."

2012 Northern Trust Open Leaderboard
Rank Golfer Total Round 2
1 Phil Mickelson -6 70
2 Pat Perez
-5 65
3 Jimmy Walker -4 66
3 Matt Kuchar
-4 69
3 Carl Pettersson -4 70
3 Jarrod Lyle
-4 65
3 Jonathan Byrd
-4 70

Perez and Lyle each had six birdies on Friday in putting up the low rounds of the tournament. But Lyle might have had seven birdies but he missed an 18-foot par on the 10th hole to settle for par.

Neither Lyle nor Perez had a bogey in the second round.

2012 Northern Trust Open, Second Round Leaderboard: Phil Mickelson Shoots 70, Maintains One Stroke Lead

Phil Mickelson couldn't seem to get on a roll on Friday during the second round of the Northern Trust Open, but that didn't keep him from maintaining his lead over the rest of the field, firing a 1-under 70 to move to 6-under for the week at Riviera Country Club.

Phil started off the back nine, and went out in even par 36 with a birdie on 16 and a bogey on 18. He started his second nine off right with a birdie on the par-5 first, but gave it back a few holes later on the seventh. But then on the eighth Phil showed why he is the master of the short game, spinning a wedge from 109 yards back into the cup for an eagle two. He would unfortunately end the day on a low note, bogeying the ninth to finish his day.

As for the rest of the field, swede Carl Pettersson is hanging tough at 5-under for the week, while Jimmy Walker and Matt Kuchar find themselves at 4-under for the week. Walker is 5-under for the day, currently owning the low round of the day thus far.

Northern Trust Open 2012, Second Round Leaderboard: Phil Mickelson Makes Turn At -1, Carl Pettersson Charging

The second round of the Northern Trust Open is well underway at Riviera Country Club, with first round leader Phil Mickelson still tied atop the leaderboard on Friday as Sweedish golfer Carl Pettersson is vaulting himself up the ranks with a fine round of his own.

Phil couldn't get anything going until the 16th (his sixth hole) making birdie on the par 3, but gave it back to wholes later with a bogey on the 18th. Phil would gain one stroke back on the par-5 first with a birdie, leaving him at 1-under for the day and 6-under for the tournament.

As for Pettersson, his 3-under round on the day thus far has put him tied with Mickelson at 6-under, with the closest competitor to them being Stewart Cink, two shots back at 4-under. Bo Van Pelt has the round of the day thus far, currently sitting 4-under through his first nine holes Friday.

2012 Northern Trust Open: TV Schedule, Tee Times, Parings For Friday

Phil Mickelson took sole possession of the lead on Thursday at the 2012 Northern Trust Open with a chip-in on the 18th hole from 35 feet away for a birdie and a first-round 66, good for five under par. Play was halted for darkness on Thursday, with 30 of the 144 players left on the course at Riviera Country Club at Pacific Palisades.

"It wasn’t one I was really trying to make," Mickelson told the Associated Press. "It was quick, it was downhill, and I had to play about four or five feet of break, so it’s not one that you’re trying to get aggressive with. I was trying to get good speed and try to let it feed with the break, and I got fortunate, obviously, that it went in."

2012 Northern Trust Open Scores And Leaderboard: Phil Mickelson Leads After First Round 66

Phil Mickelson came into the week at Riviera Country Club a hot golfer, having won last week at Pebble Beach for his 40th career PGA Tour victory. After the first round at the 2012 Norther Trust Open Thursday at Pacific Palisades, Mickelson is atop the leaderboard again after a five-under-par 66 in round one.

Mickelson, who had five birdies in his first 13 holes before bogeying the 16th, birdied the par-4 18th hole to move one shot ahead of J.B. Holmes and Hunter Mahan, each of whom had much more volatile days on the course.

Holmes and Mahan each began their day on the 10th hole within 10 minutes of each other, and both had eight birdies, two bogies, and a double bogey. Mahan shot a six on the par-4 18th hole, while Holmes did the same on the eighth hole.

Jonathan Byrd and Carl Pettersson sit one shot back at three under par. Sergio Garcia, Matt Kuchar, and Rory Sabbatini are part of a logjam of eight players tied for sixth at two under par. Fan favorite Fred Couples, who won the tournament in 1990 and 1992, shot an opening-round 70, and sits three shots off the lead.

2012 Northern Trust Open Leaderboard
Rank Golfer Round 1 Par
1 Phil Mickelson 66 -5
2 J.B. Holmes 67 -4
2 Hunter Mahan 67 -4
4 Jonathan Byrd 68 -3
4 Carl Pettersson 68 -3

Defending tournament champion Aaron Baddeley shot a two-over 73 in the first round, and sits tied for 61st, six shots off the pace. Top ranked amateur and UCLA sophomore Patrick Cantlay had a tough day at Riviera, shooting a seven-over 78, his worst round in any professional event thus far.

2012 Northern Trust Open, First Round Leaderboard: Bubba Watson Leading In Blustery Conditions at Riviera

A tempestuous breeze during the first round of play at the Northern Trust Open has made low scoring a bit difficult thus far, as only nine players sit in red numbers at the moment, led by big hitting Bubba Watson at 4-under on his round today.

Bubba has done well to avoid making bogies so far on Thursday, rocking a clean scorecard through the first 13 holes after teeing off No 10. Birdies on 13 and 17 sent him out at 2-under after his first nine, than back-to-back- birdies on 2 and 3 moved him two shots clear of the field. He would make his first bogey No. 4, his 14th hole, to drop back to 3-under for the day.

K.J. Choi, Jonathan Byrd, Jim Furyk and three others currently sit at 2-under for the tournament, while No. 1 golfer in the world Luke Donald is at 1-under through 15 holes today.

Much of the field is yet to tee off, including last week's champ at Pebble Beach Phil Mickelson, who is scheduled to tee off No. 1 at 12:12 p.m. PT.

2012 Northern Trust Open: Patrick Cantlay First UCLA Amateur At Riviera Since 1987

Among the most talked about players at the 2012 Northern Trust Open, which begins Thursday morning at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, is UCLA sophomore Patrick Cantlay, the top ranked amateur in the world. Cantlay, the 2011 U.S. Amateur champion, is playing the local tournament via sponsor's exemption.

"I think my game has matured. I have gotten a little bigger and a little stronger. I also think that I feel a lot more comfortable out here, I know the routine and what to do," said Cantlay, who said on Wednesday that he has played Riviera "10 to 12 times."

Cantlay is one of six UCLA Bruins in the event, joining professionals Kevin Chappell, Brandt Jobe, Spencer Levin, Tom Pernice Jr. and John Merrick. Cantlay, who will tee off at 8:30 a.m. PST at the 10th tee box at Riviera, was the low amateur in the 2011 U.S. Open, finishing 21st. Cantlay is the first UCLA amateur at the Northern Trust Open since Jobe in 1987.

"He seems like a really nice person and a heck of a player," Phil Mickelson said on Wednesday. "I've obviously seen what he's been doing on the golf course, and it's impressive. From Hartford to the U.S. Open to the U.S. Amateur, he's one of the top amateurs in the country and has done a lot for UCLA golf."

2012 Northern Trust Open Preview: Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples Highlight Field At Riviera

The 2012 Northern Trust Open gets underway on Thursday with plenty of great story lines. Many of the world's best golfers are ready to tame the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades beginning Thursday morning, including the winners of the last three tournaments on the PGA schedule, who are paired together.

Phil Mickelson, who picked up his 40th career win last week at Pebble Beach, will tee off with Kyle Stanley, the winner of the Waste Management Phoenix Open, and Brandt Snedeker, who won the Farmers Insurance Open from Torrey Pines.

"I really like Riviera. It's one of the best courses in the world. I've enjoyed playing here in the last four or five years," said Mickelson. "I'm looking forward to try and get in contention this weekend."

Mickelson won the Northern Trust Open in 2008 and 2009, and is not the only multiple winner of the event in the field. Longtime fan favorite Fred Couples, winner of the 1990 and 1992 versions of the event, then known as the Nissan Los Angeles Open.

It is my favorite tournament. Everyone talks about how great a course it is. I have always liked it from the day I got here," said Couples on Wednesday. "The greens are so small that the long hitters playing out of the rough, if they do get a decent lie, coming into these greens with shorter clubs is a huge advantage, whereas a shorter hitter feels like he's not at a disadvantage."

The 144-player field begins play at 6:45 a.m. PST on Thursday. George McNeill, Jason Duffner, and John Merrick start things off from the first tee, while Jarrod Lyle, Greg Owen, and Kyung-tae Kim will open the 10th tee on Thursday morning. The 2012 Northern Trust Open carries a $6.6 million purse, with $1.118 million and 500 FedEx Points going to the winner.
