Ryan Madson contract with Angels now official

The righty reliever has signed a one-year deal that could be worth $7 million if he stays healthy.

Ryan Madson has signed with the Angels and is expected assume closer duties for them next season, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman. Reports surfaced that Madson has passed his physical after signing an incentive-laden one-year deal with a $3.5 million base pay. Roster bonuses and incentives can drive the relievers' price tag to $7 million.

"We are thrilled to have Ryan on board," said Angles GM Jerry Dipoto. "His pedigree as a major league reliever Is unquestionable, and his experience in championship situations will be a big boost to our bullpen."

Madson, 32, is coming off Tommy John surgery that prevented him from starting a single game for the Cincinnati Reds, who signed him to a one-year deal last offseason. The righty reliever previously spent eight seasons in Philadelphia, earning the closer job in 2011 and recording 32 saves. Madson has a career 3.59 ERA in 630 innings pitched.

Ernesto Frieri, the incumbent closer, had 23 saves after coming over from the Padres in a May 3, 2012 trade. The 26-year-old would presumably be the setup man for the Angels with Madson's signing.
