It wasn't pretty, but the Long Beach St. 49ers won their second straight game to open the Big West Conference season, a 55-50 home victory over the Cal Poly Mustangs on Thursday night at the Walter Pyramid. The 49ers have won five of their last six games and are 2-0 in Big West play.

Cal Poly got off to a 13-4 lead to open the game, but for the final 30 or so minutes of the game neither team led by more than four points. The Mustangs' Joel Awich missed a three-pointer with one second remaining that would have tied the game.

Casper Ware led Long Beach State with 17 points inthe win. T.J. Robinson had 13 points and 14 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. Long Beach State shot 43.9% in the win. Will Taylor scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Cal Poly in defeat.

The 49ers head on the road Saturday night to battle the Cal State Northridge Matadors.
