Angels 2, Rangers 1: Mark Trumbo Prevents Sweep With Walk-Off Home Run

Mark Trumbo hit a two-run home run off Mike Adams in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Los Angeles Angels a 2-1 walk-off win over the Texas Rangers in Anaheim Thursday night. The win prevented a four-game sweep by the Rangers and snapped a five-game losing streak by the Angels. The Angels are now six game back in the American League West.

Jered Weaver pitched seven strong innings, allowing just six hits and a walk while striking out five. His one blemish was a solo home run to Mike Napoli in the seventh inning, which Napoli admired a bit going around the bases. Napoli made his ex-teammates pay during the four-game series in Anaheim, collecting seven hits in 19 at-bats, including two home runs and two doubles. On the season, Napoli is hitting .342/.405/.632 against his old team.

Napoli has 20 home runs, 50 RBI, and is hitting .293/.395/.598 this season for Texas, while making $5.8 million.

Vernon Wells, who struck out in his only plate appearance Thursday, has 17 home runs, 46 RBI, and is hitting .200/.231/.365, while making $23 million (the Angels are paying $18 million). Wells is due $63 million over the next three seasons.

Colby Lewis pitched seven scoreless innings for Texas, and Mark Lowe pitched a scoreless eighth. Elvis Andrus had three hits, including a double and a stolen base for the Rangers.

Torii Hunter singled in the bottom of the ninth inning, extending his hitting streak a season-high 16 games. Hunter scored on the Trumbo home run, which was a team-leading 23rd for the rookie. Peter Bourjos had two hits on the night for the Halos. The Angels next host Baltimore for a weekend series beginning Friday night, with Dan Haren facing Jo Jo Reyes in the opener.
