College Football Rankings Week 9: LSU Takes Top Spot in USA Today/Coaches Poll, USC No Where To Be Found

After a rough and tumble weekend of college football action the LSU Tigers have taken over the top spot in the USA Today/Coaches Poll for week nine of the season. There was a whole lot of movement in the top 25 this week, but oddly enough not involving USC.

Former number one Oklahoma was relegated to ninth after being stunned by Texas Tech, while Wisconsin’s loss to Michigan State puts them from fourth to 11th, moving MSU into No. 10 this week. Stanford vaulted into third with their dismantling of Washington, effectively knocking them out of the top 25, and is joined by Alabama at No. 2, Oklahoma State No. 4, and Boise State at No. 5 to round out the top five.

One would think that after handling the Fighting Irish by the score of 31-17 in South Bend the Trojans might be getting some love in the polls, especially since they’ve been so close in other polls (USC 27th in week 8’s AP Poll). Nevertheless it was the Irish receiving votes not the Trojans, though neither of them actually made the top 25.

Georgia, Texas Tech, Cincinnati, and Southern Mississippi all made the top 25 this week after being unranked last week, while No. 19 Georgia Tech (6-2, lost to Miami, Fla., 24-7), No. 21 Illinois (6-2, lost to Purdue 21-14), and No. 23 Auburn (5-3, lost to LSU 45-10), all fell out of the top 25 this week as well.
